Pico Island is one of the Azores’ most extraordinary treasures – a place where the raw forces of nature are still visible in every curve of the landscape. This journey invites travelers to explore an island forged by fire, shaped by tradition, and celebrated for its wine culture, unlike anywhere else in the world. Dramatic lava fields stretch toward the Atlantic, UNESCO‑protected vineyards rise in geometric labyrinths, volcanic lakes mirror the sky, and natural pools carved by eruptions glow in shades of turquoise. These itinerary blends exploration with relaxation, immersing guests in Pico’s volcanic soul through unforgettable landscapes, local gastronomy, and a connection to the island’s deep-rooted heritage.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

UNESCO Volcanic Vineyards & Pico’s Wine Culture: Explore the island’s UNESCO‑protected vineyards, a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world. Thousands of black basalt stone walls create a labyrinth that protects the vines from sea spray and wind. Learn about Pico’s unique volcanic terroir, taste local grape varieties like Verdelho and Arinto dos Açores, and experience the deep cultural heritage behind these centuries‑old winemaking traditions.

These stops offer unforgettable scenery, gentle walks, and opportunities for swimming when conditions allow.

Day 2: MADALENA: PICO ISLAND VOLCANOES AND LAKES TOUR

Depending on the day of the week, enjoy one of two extraordinary island experiences. Both tours highlight Pico’s volcanic origins, cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural formations.

ARRIVALS ON TUESDAYS AND SATURDAYS

Discover the essence of Pico Island on this full-day tour that blends history, landscapes, and local culture. We begin along the North Coast, stopping in Cachorro and Lajido, two emblematic areas tied to Pico’s wine-making past. Here you’ll explore traditional adegas (wine cellars) and remnants of the island’s golden wine age, including small ports, tidal wells, and old distilleries.

Continuing to São Roque, we pause to visit one of the island’s beloved natural swimming pools, formed by volcanic rock and cherished by the local community. Crossing toward the South Coast, the road offers sweeping ocean views and glimpses of the neighboring island of São Jorge, leading us to Lagoa do Capitão. Set within Pico’s protected central landscape, this beautiful crater lake is rich in native vegetation and an excellent spot for birdwatching.

Midday, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, where you’ll taste traditional Azorean cuisine made with regional ingredients. In the afternoon, we explore Lajes do Pico, the island’s oldest settlement and former whaling capital. Stroll through its charming streets and enjoy a guided visit to the Whaler’s Museum, gaining insight into a key chapter of Azorean history.

Before returning to Madalena, we stop at Criação Velha, home to Pico’s iconic lava-stone vineyards. This striking landscape helps explain why the island’s vineyard culture was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, offering a perfect conclusion to a day rich in culture, nature, and tradition.

ARRIVALS ON MONDAYS, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS

Set off on an unforgettable full-day adventure starting in Madalena, where you’ll be picked up and introduced to the lesser-known side of Pico Island. Throughout the day, we explore some of Pico’s natural “mysteries,” discovering scenic viewpoints, volcanic landscapes, and peaceful mountain lagoons that reveal the island’s raw beauty.

Midday, we slow the pace to enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by nature, nestled between volcanoes and volcanic lakes. This relaxed break allows you to fully disconnect and appreciate the island in its purest and most tranquil form.

In the afternoon, the journey continues with a visit to the Casa dos Vulcões, an interpretive center dedicated to the volcanic origins of the Azores. Through interactive displays and engaging explanations, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of Pico’s geological history, volcanic activity, and the powerful natural forces that shaped the landscape you explored during the day.

After a full day immersed in nature and discovery, we return to Madalena, where you’ll be dropped off with lasting memories of Pico’s volcanic soul.

Overnight in Madalena.

Day 3: MADALENA DEPARTURE (10km – 15min)

After breakfast, enjoy final moments soaking in the views of Pico’s lava fields and Atlantic horizon. A private transfer will take you to the airport, carrying with your unforgettable memories of volcanic landscapes, wine shaped by the sea, and the unique magic that defines Pico Island.
